Week 11: Eureka

This week at SpockSoc, we’re showing Eureka season four. It’s been rather a long wait. For those not in the know, Eureka is a town created by Albert Einstein and the US government, and administrated by a corporation named Global Dynamics. In it, the government has gathered all the greatest minds in the country. Of course, since the town is composed almost entirely of geniuses, when things go wrong, they REALLY go wrong.

Enter Jack Carter, formerly a US Federal Marshall, now town sheriff. He’s a complete average joe, and since he’s the only one in town who’s not an absolute genius, he’s therefore usually the only one who can think of a solution to the current problem at hand. Or at least, the only one who can say something so stupid that it gives everyone else the clue to solving it.

In any case, it’s a great series. Everyone should certainly try to come, even if they haven’t seen Eureka before – it’s a new season, and all of last season’s storylines got wrapped up last season. This screening will even include the Eureka side of the crossover with Warehouse 13. Starting at 5pm in Red Centre G001. Pizza run at 7-ish.

Also, remember: AGM next week. All Exec positions are up for re-election, even the presidency. We’re especially in need of a new treasurer, as Erin, our prior one, started a new job this session which runs on Friday nights. If you are thinking of running for office, don’t worry that we’ll be tossing you into the deep end – we’ll still be around to help ease you into things.

Remember we need at least fifteen people there, even if it’s just for the AGM. I’m aiming to start the AGM at 7:30, and have dinner at the same time, so even if you can’t come for the whole night, try to be there then. Drop me a line if you want me to put you down for pizza.

Week 13: Eureka

Hey all! Last week of session, hey? SpockSoc won’t be having any events during the exam period or holidays (because people have exams. And go on holidays) but we’ve got another jam-packed session planned for you next session. As soon as we get some jam and start packing.

But first! This Friday we’re showing Eureka, the last four episodes of season three. Come along even if you haven’t seen anything of Eureka – I’ll give brief character descriptions so people know who’s who. We’re finishing off the season so we can start fresh with season four next session. It’s a great series starring Colin Ferguson as Jack Carter, the average normal-joe guy who happens to be the sheriff in Eureka, a town full of geniuses. And when things go wrong around geniuses, they go wrong real bad. =) 5pm in Rex Vowels. Pizza run at 7-ish.

Week 6: Eureka

This week at SpockSoc, we’re showing Eureka. It got cancelled shortly before our last screening of it, leaving us with only one episode left to show, but has since gotten de-canceled, giving us more episodes to show, yay. By some coincidence, the episode immediately prior to the last one we showed will be on TV at Midnight on Friday, if people have been watching.

Since it’s been a while since we last saw any, here’s a brief recap. Eureka is a town where America’s best scientists have been gathered together since Einstein created it during World War II. Essentially, the whole town is full of geniuses, who, when things go wrong (as they inevitably do) tend to wreak havoc with the very laws of time and space.

Meet Jack Carter, formally a US Marshall, now town Sheriff. An average Joe who found himself being transferred to Eureka. He’s the only man in town stupid enough to actually solve the assorted things that happen. Figures. Other characters include his daughter Zoe, sister Lexi, love interest and boss Allison, deputy Jo, town mayor/mechanic/forensic/rocket scientist Henry, and general gofer guy Fargo.

In any case, the first half of season three introduced Eva Thorne, also known as The Fixer – sent to Eureka to restructure Global Dynamics (the company that oversees the town) after a spot of espionage from a rival company almost resulted in secret technologies being stolen. However, Ms Thorne, unbeknownst to the other characters, has a history with the town. Something happened there right back in the thirties, before the town was built, and secrets still lie buried in the tunnels beneath.

Which brings us to the first episode we’ll watch on Friday. Don’t worry if you didn’t get any of what I’ve said, as there’s a rather extensive recap at the start of the episode. Screening starts at 5pm in Goldstein G06 – pizza run as normal. (That’s $5 per half pizza.)

This week at SpockSoc, we’ll be showing Eureka season three.

For those not familiar with the show, Eureka is a town in America where the government has gathered the country’s best scientists to develop shiny new technology. That said, as ever when lots of scientists get together in American shows, things start to go wrong with very fabric of space/time on a regular basis. Enter Sherrif Jack Carter, the average-joe former federal marshall who got recruited to be the town’s police chief.

It’s quite a funny series, and I suggest you come along, even if you haven’t seen the first two seasons – while there is a bit of a story arc, it should be reasonably easy to pick up.
