Week 5: Continuum

This week at SpockSoc, we’re showing a new Canadian series called Continuum. I haven’t actually seen any of it, and I don’t know how well it was received, so it’s gonna be a bit of an experiment – come along and see how you like it. It stars Rachel Nichols, who (among other things) was Scarlett O’Hara in G.I. Joe, and Gaila (the Orion girl) in the latest Star Trek. Other names people might recognise include Lexa Doig, Tony Amendola and Jennifer Spence, Mike Dopud and William B. Davis.

When a group of rebels convicted as terrorists escapes execution by fleeing from the year 2077 to 2012, Kiera Cameron (Rachel Nichols), a future Vancouver law enforcement officer, is involuntarily transported with them. In order to track them down and keep them from changing the past (and presumably future), Kiera joins the Vancouver Police Department and uses the skills of a young tech expert, Alec Sadler (Erik Knudsen).

Screening starts at 5pm this Friday. We’ve decided to stay in ChemSci M18, because the other options are either the same or worse – though on the plus side, we’ve worked out how to use the whole projection screen. Yay. Pizza run at 7-ish.

In other news, our annual trivia night is coming up soon, on a Friday night somewhere around the middle of the session – which week specifically will need to be confirmed. That doesn’t mean you can’t start to get ready for it, though. For a $5 entry fee, everyone’s invited – SpockSoc members and non-members alike – so assemble a team of friends and sweep through the competition. =) Our AGM will also be on the same night, and we need to get enough people along so that it counts, which in turn means we’ll be able to keep existing. =D

Week 4: Once Upon a Time

To celebrate free-to-air television finally managing to catch us up on a series, we’re going to regain our lead. =D So this week at SpockSoc, we’re showing Once Upon a Time, the last third of season one. There’s eight episodes to go, though, which means we’ll be a bit pressed for time, so we’ll be starting as close to 5pm as we can manage – try not to be late. =)

5pm this Friday, pizza run at 7-ish. With the latest upgrades to the A/V system in ChemSci M18, the room is less ideal for our purposes than it used to be, so we’re hoping maybe we can change, but unless I indicate otherwise, that’s where we’ll be this week too.

You don’t need the blurb from me, yes? You’ve heard it before. =)

Week 3: Movie Outing and Eureka

First, we’re finally going to see The Dark Knight Rises – the 6pm screening this Wednesday the 1st of August at the Randwick Ritz. We’ll be meeting up in the lobby starting from around 5:30 or so in order that we can all go in together. Remember, having Arc membership will get you a discount from the Ritz, and showing your SpockSoc card to me will get you a $2 reimbursement.

This Friday’s screening is Eureka, season five. Eureka takes place in a high tech fictional community of the same name, located in the U.S. state of Oregon, and inhabited entirely by brilliant scientists working on new scientific advances. The town is operated by a corporation called Global Dynamics (GD), which is overseen by the United States Department of Defense. U.S. Marshal Jack Carter stumbles upon Eureka while transporting a fugitive prisoner (his own rebellious teenage daughter Zoe) back to her mother’s home in Los Angeles. When a faulty experiment cripples the sheriff of Eureka, Carter finds himself quickly chosen to fill the vacancy. Despite not being a genius like most members of the town, Jack Carter demonstrates a remarkable ability to connect to others, keen and practical insights, and a dedication to preserving the safety of Eureka.

When last we saw our heroes, the Astraeus – the spaceship intended to take explorers to Saturn’s moon Titan – had been hijacked, with most of the main characters on board, by persons not explicitly mentioned in dialogue but rather strongly hinted at by the season arc. So yeah. Where did they go?

Starting at 5pm this Friday in ChemSci M18 – pizza run as usual. Don’t miss it.

Star Trek 25th Anniversary Special Screening

The Ritz Cinema is having a special 25th anniversary celebration of Star Trek: The Next Generation by screening two episodes that have been digitally remastered especially for the big screen. It’s on at 8pm this Thursday (the 26th) and we have been planning a get-together for it. This is a one off screening so try to get there early to ensure you get a ticket.

Also for those interested the Ritz is giving away prizes for those coming in the best costume on the night.

Details about this can be found on Ritz Coming Soon page, http://www.ritzcinema.com.au/coming.html

Week 1: Game of Thrones

I hope you all enjoyed your holidays. I certainly am. =) Writing this e-mail from international waters just outside of Reykjavik, Iceland. For most of us, however, it’s time to return to uni for session two.

On the plus side, more uni means more SpockSoc, yay! Since I’m still away, James will be running the screening. This Friday, we’ll be showing the second half of Game of Thrones season two.

Screening starts at 5pm this Friday as usual, with pizza run at 7-ish in ChemSci M18.

Stuvac Movie: MiB 3

Just a few weeks of exams left until it’s holiday time. But before the exams start, SpockSoc will be going to see Men in Black III at the Randwick Ritz – mostly just because we forgot to arrange an outing for it last week. Silly us. Anyway, we’ll be going to the 6:30pm 2D screening on Wednesday (the 6th) – so meet in the lobby up at sixish or so – with dinner afterwards. Take a break from study and come have some fun. Remember, Arc membership gets you an $8 ticket, and SpockSoc membership is worth a $2 reimbursement for those who ask.

We might also be having some other screenings or outings during the holidays – the announcements will be appearing on our Facebook page and our website (www.spocksoc.com) rather than the mailing list, so keep an eye out. We’re also busily working on a screening schedule for next session…

Week 13: Lost Girl

Last week of session, aww. On the plus side, we’ll be back next session, yay! In this week’s screening, we’ll be continuing Lost Girl season two, which we started earlier in the session.

To repeat the blurb I gave last time: Bo is a succubus who grew up in an adoptive human family, unaware of her non-human nature and of the Fae world. Her succubus powers only become apparent to her when she accidentally killed her first love by draining him of his life energy, an act which forced her to flee her home. In the pilot episode, Bo saves a human girl named Kenzi; the two quickly become friends and Kenzi decides they should team up to create a Fae/Human detective agency. Confronted by the Fae elders with having to choose a side (“Light” or “Dark”), Bo declares herself neutral, deciding to side with humans.

5pm Friday in ChemSci M18.

Week 12: Once Upon a Time

Second last week, whew. Due to poor reviews and negative comments (and the fact that it’s airing on Ten), we’ve decided to can our original plan of Touch. Instead, we’re showing more Once Upon a Time.

The show is based on the theory that there is an alternate universe where every classic fairy tale character exists – a world that has a loose connection to Our World. On the night of her 28th birthday, bail bonds collector Emma Swan (Jennifer Morrison) is reunited with Henry (Jared S. Gilmore) – the son she gave up for adoption ten years ago – and takes him back to his hometown of Storybrooke, Maine – a place where nothing is what it seems.

Henry has in his possession a large book of fairy tales and is convinced that Emma is the daughter of Snow White (Ginnifer Goodwin) and Prince Charming (Josh Dallas) – who sent her away so she would be protected from a powerful curse enacted by the Evil Queen (Lana Parrilla), a curse in which she is the only one with a happy ending. It’s because of the curse that everyone in Storybrooke is frozen in time with no memories of their former selves – except for the Queen, who is Storybrooke’s mayor and Henry’s adoptive mother Regina Mills. Emma refuses to believe a word of Henry’s “theory” and returns Henry home, but then decides to remain in the New England town…and causes the hands of the Clock Tower to move for the first time in 28 years.

5pm Friday in ChemSci M18.

Week 11: Game of Thrones

This week at SpockSoc, the first half of Game of Thrones season two.

Set in the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros, Game of Thrones chronicles the violent dynastic struggles among the kingdom’s noble families for control of the Iron Throne; as the series opens, additional threats from the snow and ice covered region north of Westeros and from the eastern continent across a narrow sea are simultaneously beginning to rise.

For those who missed the first season… um… I don’t really think any recap I could deliver could manage much. There’s a rather significant previously-on segment at the start of the first episode, but you might be better off looking for a synopsis online somewhere. Like Wikipedia.

5pm Friday in ChemSci M18.

Week 10: Grimm

Whew, week ten hey? Only a few more weeks of session left. Hope people aren’t starting to get bogged down with assignments (but hey, you should have done them before the last second anyway =P). This week, we’re showing Grimm. It started at around the same time as Once Upon a Time, but I decided to hold off screening it for a while due to the similar genre.

Homicide Detective Nick Burkhardt of the Portland Police Bureau learns he is descended from a line of “guardians” known as “Grimms,” charged with keeping balance between humanity and the mythological creatures (called “Wesen”) of the world. Throughout the episodes, he must battle against an assortment of dangerous creatures, with help from his friend Monroe (who is a reformed creature), and his partner Detective Hank Griffin.

5pm this Friday in ChemSci M18 as usual.

On a side note, I’m planning to rearrange the remaining screenings so I can show Game of Thrones next week, so make sure you don’t miss it. =)
