Week 7 – Daredevil Season 2

DareDevilHi everyone,

Life can be funny, can’t it? One minute you’re balancing your double life as a successful lawyer and badass vigilante, the next there’s a dozen ninjas on your tail and it seems like Friday will never show up.

Nope, wait. That’s not us, that’s human disaster Matt Murdock, the subject of this week’s screening – Daredevil!

That’s right: if last week’s foray into the Netflix end of the MCU pool wasn’t enough, we’re diving right back in to find out what happens next to the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen, starting from episode seven of the second season. Elektra’s back in town, the Punisher’s going to trial and about five separate groups of people want Matt dead. Won’t this be fun?

If you need a recap on the story so far (and a reminder that Foggy Nelson deserves better), you can find one here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daredevil_(season_2)

As per usual, we’ll be kicking off at about 5pm in the Macauley Theatre, with a pizza run for dinner around 7ish.

Thanks to everyone who showed up on Friday to support the bake sale – it was a resounding success! Make sure to keep an eye on our facebook page for more events in the coming weeks!

We look forward to seeing you on Friday!
Jenn

Semester Two, Week 6 – Jessica Jones Season 1

Jessica-JonesHi everyone,

You guys, we’re so close to the middle of semester now. I hope you’re all coping with the twists and turns uni life can throw at you. It can sometimes take a heroic effort to get through the week, but hey! There’s always Friday to look forward to!

This week, we’re heading over to the darker side of the MCU for another round with the excellent Jessica Jones! We’re going to jump right into the thick of things with episode seven – Jones is closing in on Kilgrave, but will she be able to take him down before he destroys everything she cares about? If you need a recap, you can find one here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jessica_Jones_(season_1)
As per usual, we’ll be kicking off at about 5pm in the Macauley Theatre, with a pizza run for dinner around 7ish.

Finally, I promise this will be the last week you’ll have to look at the title of this event, because our bake sale is this Friday! Join us outside the library as we boldly go where no scone has gone before: the Pie-nal Bun-tier. More info can be found here:

We look forward to seeing you there!

Semester 2, Week 5 – Killjoys Season 1 and 2

KilljoysHi everyone,

Wouldn’t it be great if we could just throw all this uni business away and run off to outer space? Why, there’s no end to the things we could do – explore strange new worlds, aim to misbehave, make the Kessel run in less than 12 parsecs…

Or – and here’s a thought – how about a spot of bounty hunting?
This week, Spocksoc are returning to the wild and woolly world of the Quad to catch up with our favourite Reclamation Agents in Killjoys! We’ll be polishing off the final three episodes of season one (8-10, for those playing along at home), so if you need to catch up, there’s a link here:
http://killjoys.wikia.com/wiki/Season_1

But wait, there’s more! Once we’re done with season one we’re going to live dangerously and jump right into season two, because lingering cliffhangers are for boring people.

As per usual, we’ll be kicking off at about 5pm in the Macauley Theatre, with a pizza run for dinner around 7ish.

If you can’t wait til Friday to see our shining faces (and who can blame you) we’ll be heading to the movies on Tuesday to enjoy the last gasp of the US summer movie season, the stop-motion feast for the senses, Kubo and the Two Strings:

And in other news, we’re planning to put the fun back in fundraising with our latest bake sale: The Pie-nal Bun-tier!
(I’d apologise for the title but honestly it came to me in a dream at 3am and I’m actually pretty proud of it)

We look forward to seeing you this week!

Semester 2, Week 4 – Orphan Black Season 4

Orphan blackHi everyone,

Spocksoc doesn’t care if Monday’s blue, Tuesday’s gray and Wednesday too. We don’t even care about Thursday, because it’s Friday and we’re in love with our regular screening!

This week, it’s time to look back in on Clone Club as we begin season four of the brilliant Orphan Black! We left our favourite Project Leda subjects in a pretty good place last season, with Castor defeated and the original gene donor safely out of the clutches of Neolution. But Sarah, Cosima, Allison and the rest of the gang certainly aren’t out of the woods yet. If you need your memory jogged about all the twists and turns of last season, you can refresh it here:
http://orphanblack.wikia.com/wiki/Season_3

As per usual, we’ll be kicking off at about 5pm in the Macauley Theatre, with a pizza run for dinner around 7ish.

Things are calming down on the film front, so no movie outing this week. Next week, however, we’ll be taking in Laika Entertainment’s latest stop-motion extravaganza, Kubo and the Two Strings! You can find more information here:
https://www.facebook.com/events/1033434066752132/
And in a few weeks’ time Spocksoc will be boldly going beyond the Pie-nal Bun-tier (sorry not sorry) and hosting a bake sale. Check out the link below to find out how you can help Spocksoc live long and prosper for another year:

We look forward to seeing you this week!

Semester Two, Week 2 – Grimm Season 5

GrimmHi everyone,

I hope you’ve all managed to survive your first week back with a minimum of early morning classes, surprise pop quizzes, or Pokemon Go-related accidents. Sure, you’ve got another long week ahead of you, but at least there’s always Friday to look forward to, and with it, our Friday screening!

This week, we venture into the wilds of Portland, Oregon with season five of Grimm. It’s been a pretty wild ride so far this season – Juliette was dead, and then she wasn’t, Rosalee got caught up in the creepiest Peter Pan story ever, and Nick and Adalind managed get themselves into a romantic subplot, because heaven forbid we not have one of those.

We’ll be picking up with episode eight, so if you need a recap you can find one here:
http://grimm.wikia.com/wiki/Season_5

As per usual, we’ll be kicking off at about 5pm in the Macauley Theatre, with a pizza run for dinner around 7ish.

In other news, after an impressive three-month streak we’ve managed to run out of movies to see this week, but never fear! Next Tuesday we’ll be walking on the wild side of the DC universe with the Suicide Squad – more details can be found here:
https://www.facebook.com/events/118735048558934/

And this Saturday, our celebration of Star Trek’s 50th anniversary continues with part two of our Star Trek 101 marathon series! For more details on where and how we’ll be boldly going, go here:

We look forward to seeing you this week!

Semester Two, Week One – Arrow Season 4

ArrowGreetings, Spocksoc!

I hope you’ve all had a relaxing winter break, but now the semester looms above us (doesn’t time fly?). And with the return of classes comes the return of our regular Friday night screenings. Grab your bow and prepare to make some terrible life choices – we’re going back to Star City with Arrow!

We’ll be picking things up in the middle of season four, starting with episode nine. Damien Darhk’s nefarious plan to take over the city is in full swing, as is Oliver’s mayoral campaign. This will end well, you guys. I’ve got a great feeling. If you need to catch up, the wiki’s a good place to start – but beware of spoilers!
http://arrow.wikia.com/wiki/Season_4_(Arrow)

As per usual, we’ll be kicking off at about 5pm in the Macauley Theatre, with a pizza run for dinner around 7ish.

And that’s not all! We’ve got a couple more great events coming up this week as Spocksoc prepares to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Star Trek!

On Tuesday night, we’ll be watching the latest entry in the Trek canon, Star Trek Beyond! It’s at 6:30pm at the Ritz Cinema, see the link below for more details:
https://www.facebook.com/events/1039876189415564/

Not enough Trek for you? Never fear! This Saturday Spocksoc is proud to present part one of our Star Trek 101 marathon series, a whirlwind tour of the best movies and episodes the franchise has to offer – with a little history along the way. More details here:
